Russian Police Breaking Law More Often

Interior Ministry figures released today indicate that the police committed more than 44,000 offenses during the course of the year.

Some 28,000 Interior Ministry personnel faced criminal or disciplinary action. The number of those taken to court increased by some 33 percent, to over 4,000.

The ministry also said that 156 police in Russia's North Caucasus region helped local militants prepare and carry out subversive or terrorist acts. Sixteen of those officers are being prosecuted, and 20 have already been dismissed from the police force.
