Saakashvili Calls For Georgia To Be Admitted Into NATO

3 February 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili today called for his country to be admitted into NATO.

Saakashvili made the call in opening remarks at a gathering of leading politicians, and military experts attending a three-day security conference in Munich.


Saakashvili said that Georgia's admission into NATO would benefit both sides.


Leading topics to be discussed at the conference are the Iranian nuclear standoff, the war on terrorism, and the futureĀ  of NATO, among others.


U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov are among other top defense officials due to address the gathering.
