U.S. Rejects UN Call To Close Guantanamo

February 16, 2006

UN Secretary-General Annan said the detainees must be brought to trial (file photo) (CTK)

16 February 2006 -- The United States has rejected a recommendation in a UN report for the U.S. military to close down a detention center for terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the facility houses what he called "dangerous terrorists."

In the report, the UN raised questions about the treatment of the detainees and called on the United States to end torture and inhuman practices.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said today that while he does not agree with everything in the report, the detainees must be brought to trial sooner or later, and the center closed.

The United States is holding around 500 detainees at Guantanamo Bay -- most of whom were captured in Afghanistan in 2001 and 2002.
