21 February 2006 -- The Serbian government is denying several media reports that top war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic has been arrested.

The office of Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica says reports today that Mladic was captured or found are not correct.

The Associated Press -- citing an unidentified senior government official -- said Mladic had been located and authorities were negotiating his surrender. Other media outlets in Serbia and Bosnia reported Mladic was arrested in Belgrade and was being transported to Bosnia.

Mladic, a former Bosnian-Serb army commander, is Europe's second most-wanted war crimes suspect after Bosnian-Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic. Mladic is accused of orchestrating the 1995 Srebrenica massacre in which 8,000 Muslim men and boys died.

The UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague said tonight it had no information on Mladic.

The Truth-Teller: Natasa Kandic, Urging Serbs To Face The Past

More than a decade has passed since the end of the Balkan wars, where international observers say ethnic Serb fighters were responsible for the bulk of atrocities in the region, particularly Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. But despite the handover of major war-crimes suspects like Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic, Belgrade remains reluctant to face the sins of the past.
