23 February 2006 -- Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad today blamed the United States and Israel for the devastating bomb attack on a Shi'ite shrine yesterday in Samarra, Iraq.
The remarks echoed those made by Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the day of the blast.
It's not clear who bombed the shrine. Iraqi officials say unknown gunmen broke in, rigged it with explosives, and blew it up.
U.S. President George W. Bush condemned the bombing and called it an evil act. He said the United States is committed to helping rebuild the shrine.
"I do want to assure the Iraqi people that the U.S. government is serious in our commitment in helping to rebuild that holy site. We understand its importance to Iraqi society, and we want to stand side by side with the [Iraqi] government in making sure that beautiful dome is restored."
Meanwhile, an Iraqi militant group linked to Al-Qaeda has blamed Iran and the Shi'ite-led Iraqi government.
