Kadyrov was nominated to the post by Chechen President Alu Alkhanov, who called him his "closest associate."

The 29-year-old Kadyrov is the son of former Chechen President Akhmed-hadji Kadyrov, who was assassinated two years ago.

Human rights groups accuse Ramzan Kadyrov of leading a shadowy security force they say is responsible for the abduction and abuse of civilians.
