Russia Partially Lifts Visa Ban On Georgians

March 10, 2006

(RFE/RL)

March 10, 2006 -- Russia is easing travel restrictions for some Georgian citizens.

Mikhail Svirin, a spokesman for the Russian Embassy in Tbilisi, says a recently imposed visa ban will be lifted for, among others: official delegations,; employees of Georgian-based Russian companies; people traveling on cultural, scientific, and sporting exchanges; and Georgians with an invitation to visit Russia.

Svirin says the new regulations came into effect on March 10.

On February 23, Russia said it would stop issuing entry visas to Georgian citizens. The decision was officially presented as a response to travel restrictions imposed by Tbilisi on troops manning the two military bases Russia maintains in Georgia.
