Senior Police Officer Killed In Daghestan

March 13, 2006

(RFE/RL)

March 13, 2006 -- Unidentified attackers have killed a senior police officer in Daghestan, in the latest in a series of attacks on police in Russia's southern republic.

The regional Interior Ministry said Shamil Zubairov was gunned down in front of his home late on March 12. He headed a department in charge of combating organized crime.

More than 40 police officers were killed in Daghestan in 2005.

Authorities have blamed the attacks on local militants working in concert with Chechen rebels or criminal gangs.
