Georgia And Turkey Agree To Share Airport In Ajara

President Sezer (left) and President Saakasvili at a joint press conference on March 14 (InterPressNews) March 14, 2006 -- Georgia and Turkey today signed an agreement on the joint use of the Batumi airport, in Georgia's Black Sea autonomous republic of Ajara.

The agreement was signed in Tbilisi by the presidents of the two countries, Mikheil Saakashvili and Ahmet Necdet Sezer.

Details of the deal were not immediately available. Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli said earlier today the agreement would help boost bilateral economic ties.

"This agreement on the joint use of Batumi airport, which is due to be signed today, is of special importance. In practice it means that Turkish air carriers will be able to use the Batumi airport almost as a domestic airport. It will also increase the importance of the Batumi airport, especially after it is renovated. This will also help develop economic ties between our countries."

Turkey and Georgia are involved in two major regional energy projects and trade volume between the two countries currently stands at an estimated $500 million a year.

Sezer today said Turkey wished Georgia to settle its sovereignty disputes with its breakaway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia quickly and peacefully so that it allocates as much resources as possible to developing its economy.
