Kazakhstan Could Build Nuclear Power Plant By 2015

March 28, 2006

(RFE/RL)

March 28, 2006 -- A Kazakh energy official today said Kazakhstan could build its first nuclear reactor by 2015.

Nesipkul Bertisbaev, an official at the Kazakh Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, said Kazakh Prime Minister Daniyal Akhmetov is heading a working group that will analyze aspects of the project.

During the Soviet era, Kazakhstan was home to one of the world's largest nuclear arsenals and to a nuclear test ground, at Semipalatinsk. It became a non-nuclear state after it gained independence in 1991.
