Three Militants, Two Police Dead After Daghestan Clash

April 17, 2006

(RFE/RL)

April 17, 2006 -- A shootout in Russia's southern republic of Daghestan today left three suspected militants dead, along with two local police officers.

Regional Interior Ministry spokeswoman Anzhela Martirosova said one of the dead was believed to be a leader of Islamic militants in the Buinaksk district, southwest of Daghestan's capital, Makhachkala.

In early April, an Interior Ministry source was quoted as saying that a shootout with security forces in Makhachkala had resulted in the death of Makhach Rasulov (aka Yasin), believed to have been a "main ideologist" of the Islamic militant group Shari'at Jamaat.
