One Armenian, One Azeri Reportedly Killed In Russia

April 23, 2006

(RFE/RL)

April 23, 2006 -- Russian media reports say an ethnic Armenian has been stabbed to death on a Moscow metro platform.

The incident occurred at the Pushkin metro station on April 22, in the city's center. The Moscow prosecutor's office says the teenage Armenian was standing on the platform with friends when a group of people got off the train and attacked them, stabbing him in the chest.

The prosecutor's office says it is examining all possible motives, including that of a racist crime.

In related news, Azerbaijan's Day.Az news agency reports unidentified attackers beat up an Azeri to death in the Russian Urals city of Novy Urengoi on April 21. The agency says the victim's body is due in Baku today.

Russia has witnessed a number of racially motivated attacks in recent months.
