Protesters Clash With Police In Daghestan

April 25, 2006 -- One person was killed and several people injured when police clashed with protesters in the southern republic of Daghestan.

Several hundred people had rallied in the town of Usukhchai, in the southern Dokusparinsky district, to demand the resignation of the head of the district administration.


The clashes reportedly erupted when police tried to prevent the protesters from breaking into the central offices of the district government. There are unconfirmed reports of gunfire. Additional security forces were being deployed to the area.


There has been no official information on the incident.
