PRAGUE, May 29, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Afghanistan's parliament called for calm in response to protests over an incident which reportedly saw U.S. and Afghan security forces opening fire on civilians in Kabul today, RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan reported.

Afghanistan's Interior Ministry said a traffic accident involving coalition forces sparked a demonstration which turned violent.

Reports say at least one person was killed in the traffic accident. It's unclear how many casualties there may have been during the protests. However, reports say at least three people and perhaps several more have been killed.

Parliament broke its session upon hearing news of the incident, and sent a team to investigate the situation. Parliament speaker Mohammad Yunos Qanuni urged protesters to be patient and let the government handle the situation.
