Tanks, Troops Guard Kabul After Riots

Protesters destroy police check post during riot in Kabul on May 29 (epa)

May 30, 2006 -- Security forces in tanks and on foot took to the streets of Kabul today after some of the most widespread violence in the Afghan capital since the fall of the Taliban in 2001.

An overnight curfew in the city passed without incident and there were no reports of violence early today.

On May 29, protesters chanting "Death to America!" marched on the presidential palace and rioters smashed police guard boxes, set fire to police cars and ransacked buildings, including the compound of the aid group CARE International.

The violence erupted after a convoy of U.S. military vehicles rammed into a rush-hour traffic jam, hitting several civilian cars. Five people were killed in the crash, while at least three were killed in the subsequent fighting.
