June 5, 2006 -- Kyrgyzstan's President Kurmanbek Bakiev today instructed the secretary of his Security Council, Miroslav Niazov, to draft measures aimed at strengthening security along the country's borders.

Addressing senior presidential administration members, Bakiev warned that all those who attempt to enter the country with weapons will meet their death.

“We will show no mercy to these people and we will use all the arsenal of means we have at our disposal," Bakiev said.

Bakiev also called for enhanced cooperation with neighboring states in combating “terrorism, drugs smuggling, and all forms of extremism.”

On May 12, armed clashes pitted Kyrgyz security forces against a group of gunmen who had illegally entered the country after battling Tajik border guards. The incident claimed the lives of at least two Tajik troops and six Kyrgyz soldiers and civilians.
