Police And Opposition Clash In Kazakh Capital

June 06, 2006

An opposition rally in March (RFE/RL)

ASTANA, June 6, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- About 200 opposition supporters clashed with police today in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reported.

It also says law enforcement agencies have made a number of arrests.

The unrest took place in front of the Justice Ministry, where the opposition supporters were holding an unauthorized protest rally.

The activists belong to Alga (Onward), an opposition group whose application to be registered as a party was recently rejected by the Justice Ministry.

Alga has appealed to the Supreme Court, which is expected to issue a ruling later today.
