UN Postpones Local Elections In Kosovo
June 16, 2006
June 16, 2006 -- The top UN official in Kosovo has postponed local elections for up to 12 months.
Soren Jessen-Petersen said the decision was based on the need to focus on talks on the final status of the disputed province.
Jessen-Petersen said elections "shall be held not earlier than three months and no later than six months" after the UN issues a formal decision on Kosovo's future status.
Such a decision is expected by the end of the year.
