Iraq Releases Another 500 Detainees

June 19, 2006 -- The Iraqi government has released another 500 detainees, the fourth batch to be freed as part of reconciliation moves ordered by Prime Minister Nuri Kamil al-Maliki.

A Justice Ministry spokeswoman says the detainees who were released came from the three main U.S.-run detention centers -- Abu Ghraib, Camp Bucca, and Camp Suse.


Some 1,770 detainees have been freed in the past month.


The U.S. military says 14,000 prisoners are currently held in its facilities.
