Uzbek Leader Seeks Progress On Abolishing Death Penalty


(RFE/RL) June 30, 2006 -- President Islam Karimov on June 29 ordered the creation of a working group tasked with advancing the abolishment of the death penalty in Uzbekistan.


The working group is to draw up measures facilitating the change and inform law enforcement officials about new criminal and criminal-procedural laws.


Last August, Karimov decreed that capital punishment should be abolished by January 1, 2008.

THE RECORD ON RIGHTS: On March 8, the U.S. State Department issued its global report on human rights. According to the report, 15 years after the breakup of the Soviet Union, human rights are improving in many post-communist countries. But problems persist in others, it says, despite the worldwide explosion of information and Western efforts to spread democracy. (more)
