Iranian Union Leader Released On Bail

August 09, 2006

(RFE/RL)

August 9, 2006 -- A prominent leader of Iran's workers movement was released today on bail after having spent seven months in prison.

The Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA) reported that Mansur Osanlu, the president of the Syndicate of Workers of the Tehran Bus Company, was freed after paying a bail of 1.5 billion rials (over $150,000).

The charges brought against Osanlu are unclear.

The union leader reportedly helped organize demonstrations in December 2005 to demand better working conditions for Tehran bus drivers.

Several human rights groups had expressed concern over his fate and called on authorities to release him.
