August 12, 2006 -- Canada has joined condemnations of the ban by Iranian authorities of the human rights advocacy group led by Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi.
Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay said in a statement that the ban marked a violation of the rights of the Center of Human Rights Defenders, and called for the ban to be reversed.
Iran's Interior Ministry on August 2 said the group had no valid registration permit and that it would therefore be considered illegal.
