Shi'ite Militia, Army Clashes Kill 23 In Iraq

August 28, 2006 -- Clashes between a powerful Shi'ite militia and the Iraqi Army in the southern city of Al-Diwaniyah have left at least 23 people dead and 70 injured.


The fighting broke out late August 27 when the Iraqi Army conducted raids to detain militants and seize weapons.


The dead include 15 soldiers, six civilians, and two members of the Al-Mahdi Army, which is controlled by radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Fiji is participating as part of the UN mission in Iraq. Hungary, Iceland, Slovenia, and Turkey are NATO countries supporting Iraqi stability operations but are not part of MNF-I.
