Executed Iranian Political Prisoners Remembered

September 01, 2006

(RFE/RL)

PRAGUE, September 1, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- A ceremony was reportedly held today near Tehran in memory of thousands of political prisoners executed in Iran in the late 1980s.

Reports from Tehran say families of those killed and activists paid tribute to them and placed flowers on their graves in Khavaran.

They were watched by security agents.

The mass executions took place in prisons throughout Iran between July 1988 and January 1989.

The majority of those killed were supporters of Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO), an armed opposition group.

Members of other political groups were also executed.
