Uzbek Soldier, Civilian Reportedly In Tajik Custody

(RFE/RL) September 21, 2006 -- Uzbekistan's border guards say one of their soldiers and one civilian have fallen into Tajik custody.

A pro-government Uzbek media outlet today quotes the border guard service as saying the two men were carrying out repair work along the Uzbek-Tajik border when they were detained.

The Uzbek border guards say phone calls to their Tajik counterparts have remained unanswered.

The incident took place on September 19 in the Jizzakh region.
