October 21, 2006 -- An Iranian human rights group headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi has criticized the arrest of a dissident cleric and some of his supporters.

A statement from the Defenders of Human Rights Center said the arrest of Ayatollah Seyyed Hossein Kazemeyni Boroujerdi runs "contrary to Iran's constitution and penal code" and urges the head of Iran's judiciary to examine the case personally.

Boroujerdi advocates the separation of religion and politics in Iran.
