Suspected North Korean Nuclear Site Watched

October 28, 2006

(RFE/RL)

October 28, 2006 -- News reports in Seoul say South Korean and U.S. officials are monitoring the construction of a new building and other activities at a suspected North Korean nuclear site.

Reports say the two countries are trying to determine if the communist nation is planning a second test detonation. One South Korea official said a second nuclear test by North Korea is "not believed to be imminent."

The Yonhap news agency reported that Seoul and Washington are keeping a close watch on the movement of trucks and soldiers at the Punggye-ri site in North Korea's remote northeast.

The "JoongAng Ilbo" newspaper reported that South Korea has detected a new building being erected at the site.

The South Korean Defense Ministry said it could neither confirm nor deny the reports. The United States declined comment.
