Kyrgyz Opposition Protest Enters Fourth Day

November 05, 2006

President Bakiev (RFE/RL)

November 5, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- At least several hundred opposition protesters camped in tents in the center of Bishkek for a fourth day running today in a bid to force President Kurmanbek Bakiev to implement long-delayed reforms, or step down.

The peaceful demonstrations began on November 2, when they drew up to 15,000 people. Organizers say they plan rallies again later today and tomorrow.

The protesters accuse Bakiev of failing to alleviate poverty and delaying constitutional and other reforms, including reforms that would limit his own power.

Bakiev, who came to power in March 2005 in a popular uprising has accused opposition figures of plotting to oust him by force.

Prime Minister Feliks Kulov today withdrew a request for an investigation into the alleged coup plot. A spokesman said Kulov believed opening a criminal case could provoke a

"negative reaction in society."
