Uzbekistan's Official Youth Organization Elects Leader

November 30, 2006

(RFE/RL)

November 29, 2006 -- Uzbekistan's state-controlled media outlets report that Kamolot, the country's pro-government youth organization, held its second congress in Tashkent today.

The 600-odd participants adopted a new program and statutes. They also elected Akram Alimov as their new leader.

The 39-year-old Alimov is a member of the Uzbek legislature. He replaces Batyr Ubaidullaev, who was removed from office in August.

Uzbekistan's official UzA news agency quotes participants at today's congress as saying the organization should pay more attention to protecting the country's youth "against trends that are alien to the [Uzbek] people and the idea of independence."

Kamolot was set up in 2001. The organization claims 4.6 million members.

Under new statutes adopted today, it accepts members aged between 14 and 30. Children under 14 have their own organization, Kamalak, which reportedly has 4.2 million members.

Uzbekistan has a total population of 26 million.
