(RFE/RL)

December 6, 2006 -- Lawmakers today adopted a law to open the archives of Bulgaria's former communist secret services.

The new law requires the publication of all files identifying public figures as former communist agents, but includes no provision to punish former agents.

A controversial amendment also keeps a small portion of the files secret for "national security reasons."

The law must now be signed and published by President Georgi Parvanov.
