December 6, 2006 -- Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov today warned that imposing overly tough sanctions on Iran on account of its nuclear program could draw out the dispute.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki, meanwhile, said UN sanctions will not force Iran to abandon its nuclear program.

On December 5, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany met to discuss possible sanctions against Iran over its refusal to stop enriching uranium.
