Uzbek Weightlifters Fail Drug Tests At Asian Games

December 10, 2006 -- The Olympic Council of Asia said today that two weightlifters from Uzbekistan have tested positive for drugs and been barred from the Asian Games in Doha.

The bans mean three athletes have so far been expelled for substances violations in the 15th Asian Games, which attracted some 13,000 athletes from more than 40 countries to the Qatari capital.

The council said 16-year-old Elmira Ramileva tested positive for anabolic steroids, and veteran lifter Aleksandr Urinov tested positive for cannabis. Both reportedly waived their right to the testing of second samples.

Neither had won a medal at these games, and both results came during routine tests of competitors, according to a statement on the event's official website.

A Myanmar competitor, weightlifter Than Kyi Kyi, was disqualified on December 9 after a banned diuretic was detected.

This year's Asian Games, which organizers tout as being second in size only to the Summer Olympic Games, were marred by the death of Korean rider Kim Hyung Chil during the Equestrian Individual Cross Country competition on December 7.
