Protesting Iranian Students Allege Crackdown Against Reformists

December 10, 2006 -- Hundreds of Iranian students protested at a Tehran university today to denounce a crackdown on the reformist-led Islamic Students' Association.

The protesters reportedly tried to force their way off campus to continue their rally in the streets of the capital, but were stopped by security forces.

News agency ISNA quotes a student activist, Abbas Hakimzadeh, as saying the offices of the Amir Kabir branch of that organization had been wrecked, 20 of its members suspended from courses, and others banned from attending university.

President Mahmud Ahmadinejad is expected to visit Amir Kabir's university on December 11 for a previously planned visit.

Several thousand students were estimated to have turned out for a Students Day rally on December 6 to demand greater freedoms.
