Jailed Tajik Ex-Presidential Guard Goes On Hunger Strike

December 14, 2006 -- Lawyers for the former commander of the Tajik presidential guard, Ghaffor Mirzoev, say their client today decided to go on hunger strike to protest the conditions of his detention.

The lawyers, Abdukayum Yusufov and Jamilya Kamilova, say Mirzoev is being denied meetings with his defense team and that prison authorities have reduced the number of packages he can receive from his family.

Mirzoev, who is also a former head of Tajikistan's drugs control agency, was sentenced to life in prison in August for planning a coup, murder, and other crimes. He denies the charges.
