Bulgarian Media Call For Boycott Of Libya

December 20, 2006

Two of the accused, Bulgarian nurse Christiana Valcheva and Palestinian doctor Ashraf Alhajouj, wait to hear their sentences on December 19 (epa)

December 20, 2006 -- The Bulgarian press today called for a boycott of Libya, a day after a Libyan court sentenced five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor to death.

Bulgarian papers demanded an end to Europe's economic and political relations with Libya, criticized the international community for not taking up the case of the nurses, and called for Libya to be completely isolated.

The nurses and the doctor were sentenced on charges of deliberately infecting hundreds of children with the HIV virus.

The medical workers, held in custody for the past seven years, had previously been sentenced to death in May 2004, but the Libya's Supreme Court ordered a retrial following an appeal.

Defense lawyers say the accused will appeal to the Supreme Court again.

The sentence has been criticized by many countries.
