Earthquake Strikes Kyrgyzstan

December 26, 2006 -- An earthquake measuring up to magnitude 7.0 hit Kyrgyzstan overnight, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reported.

Seismologists at the Kyrgyz National Academy of Sciences said the quake struck at 2 a.m. local time and its epicenter was in the Ala-Too mountain range, near the village of Kochkor, about 140 kilometers southeast of the capital, Bishkek.


The quake was felt in Kochkor, in the town of Balykchy, and in Bishkek.


No information was immediately available about any damage or casualties.
