Azerbaijan To Bid For 2016 Olympics

December 26, 2006 -- Azerbaijan has announced plans to bid for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Local media say the announcement was made today by President Ilham Aliyev, following an executive board meeting of Azerbaijan's Olympic committee.


The United States, Italy, India, Japan, Brazil, and Spain have also expressed an interest in staging the Summer Games in 2016.


The International Olympic Committee plans to choose the host city in 2009.
