Official Hints Iran To Continue Work With UN Nuclear Watchdog

January 04, 2007

January 4, 2006 -- The head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, Gholamreza Aqazadeh, said today that Iran will continue its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Aqazadeh said Tehran's current policy is to continue its nuclear activities within the framework of the IAEA and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Iran's parliament approved a bill in late December obliging the government to revise its cooperation with the IAEA as retaliation for the UN Security Council resolution imposing limited sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.

Western governments have accused Tehran of secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons despite frequent denials by Iranian officials who claim their efforts are aimed solely at peaceful uses.

The IAEA has sharply criticized Iran for a failure to disclose sensitive nuclear activities and reported the Iranian atomic dossier to the Security Council.
