January 6, 2007 -- Russia's Foreign Ministry has accused the United States of imposing "illegal" sanctions on Russian military companies.
A ministry statement issued today says the decision was taken against several Russian firms, including state arms trader Rosoboroneksport.
On January 5, the United States imposed sanctions on several Russian, Chinese, and North Korean firms, saying they were cooperating with Libya, Syria, and Iran.
The United States imposed similar sanctions on Russian firms in August over alleged dealings with Iran.
Russia is thought to have sold more than $6 billion worth of weapons to more than 60 countries in 2006.
