Kyrgyz Restrict Retail Operations For Non-Nationals

January 15, 2007

January 15, 2007 -- Kyrgyzstan's government has issued an order limiting foreigners' access to the country's retail sector.

The order issued today says that, as of April 1, foreign nationals and noncitizens will be barred from working at open-air markets.

It also says that the number of foreigners should not exceed 10 percent of the traders working at any given supermarket or shopping center in Kyrgyzstan.

Authorities have denied the move is aimed at squeezing foreigners out of the country.
