Lawyer Says Khodorkovsky Faces New Charges

February 1, 2007 -- An attorney for Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the jailed founder of Russia's Yukos oil company, says the Prosecutor-General's Office intends to bring new charges against her client.

The attorney, Yelena Levina, said Khodorkovsky was brought to a regional prosecutor's office today, where prosecutors announced that charges would be filed on February 5.

Levina said they did not specify the charges.

Khodorkovsky, the former chief of the now bankrupt oil giant, is serving an eight-year sentence for tax evasion and fraud in a Siberian prison colony.

Many observers believe he was arrested because he represented a political threat to President Vladimir Putin, a claim denied by the Kremlin.
