European Bank 'Unlikely' To Fund Baltic Pipeline
February 8, 2007 -- The president of the European Investment Bank, Philippe Maystadt, said today the bank is unlikely to finance a natural-gas pipeline from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea because of opposition by central European countries.
Poland and the Baltic states have been hostile to the pipeline, which will bypass them.
The joint German-Russian project is expected to cost $6 billion.
