U.S. Strikes Insurgents Targeting Helicopters

March 3, 2007 -- An air strike has killed senior insurgents suspected of targeting U.S. helicopters in Iraq.

The U.S. military said today the strike took place on March 2, north of Baghdad near the town of Taji.


Insurgents have shot down eight helicopters since January 20 in Iraq, killing a total of 28 people, mostly soldiers.


Also today, the Iraqi Defense Ministry said Iraqi security forces killed 39 militants in the western governorate of Al-Anbar on March and detained a further 30.
