Kyrgyz Premier Willing To Talk With Opposition

BISHKEK, March 17, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyz Prime Minister Azim Isabekov says his government is ready to meet and discuss issues with the opposition.

In an exclusive interview today with RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service in Bishek, Isabekov suggested that some of the opposition's positions have merit.

"I don't think that all the opposition's real opinions and stances are to be negatively assessed," he said. "Most of their ideas have a real reason. This is the first thing. Secondly, if there were [protest] rallies, then it would be possible to listen to them. But the rallies need to be peaceful. However, we, the government, have to try to negotiate with the opposition in order to avoid such rallies. I am always ready to meet with them."

During the interview, Isabekov also touched upon a variety of domestic political and economic issues.

He said that the adoption of key laws on energy, industry, agriculture, and fighting corruption will be key steps in developing the country's economy.
