The Turkish prime minister's office said Talabani had expressed regret over recent statements by Mas'ud Barzani, the head of Iraq's Kurdish regional government, warning that Iraqi Kurds would respond to any Turkish interference in northern Iraq by stirring up trouble in Turkey's predominantly Kurdish southeast.

Ankara responded by warning Barzani not to threaten Turkey, and said the price for doing so would be "very high."
