Afghan Officials Say NATO Air Strikes Kill 13 Taliban

April 28, 2007 -- Officials in Afghanistan's southeastern province of Khost say a NATO air strike killed 13 Taliban fighters after the Taliban attacked a district government headquarters.

Khost Governor Arsala Jamal says the militants attacked the local government building overnight in the province's Ali-Sher district near the border with Pakistan. He says the attack sparked a battle with police who called for NATO air support.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force has confirmed that it carried out the air strikes after receiving the request from police. NATO officials also say they think the air strikes caused Taliban casualties.

The overnight assault by the Taliban was the second attack by militants on a district government building in Afghanistan within 24 hours.

Afghan officials say Taliban militants on April 26 captured a district government building in Ghazni Province -- killing the district's chief administrator, the police chief, and three police officers. Reports say the Taliban withdrew from the government building in Ghazni today.
