U.S., Polish Officials Discuss Missile Defense

The plans have prompted protests in Russia, like this April 4 demonstration in Moscow (epa)

May 14, 2007 -- Polish and U.S. officials have begun talks to build parts of a U.S. missile-defense system in Poland.

State Department official Robert Loftis met with Poland's deputy defense and foreign ministers in Warsaw to discuss details about how the negotiations would be carried out.


In the Czech Republic, U.S. officials inspected a military base southwest of Prague where a tracking missile radar could be stationed.


Russia strongly opposes the U.S. missile-defense plan, saying it could be aimed at Moscow instead of threats from rogue states.
