Aide Says Afghan Attorney-General Beaten By Gunmen
June 8, 2007 -- An aide to Afghanistan's attorney-general, Abdul Jabar Sabet, says gunmen beat Sabet today on a road north of Kabul.
The aide said gunmen stopped Sabet's car at a roadblock, and hit him with clubs and rifle butts after he got out of the vehicle. The aide said Sabet was not hospitalized, but had no other details about his injuries.
Sabet has spoken out against corrupt elements within Afghanistan's government -- including warlords and militia leaders from the former Northern Alliance.
Meanwhile, officials reported that three police were killed today in a roadside bomb attack in Kandahar Province's Panjwayi district. In the province's Spin Boldak district, two police were killed by a roadside bomb on June 7.
Officials said as many as nine Taliban fighters were killed June 7 in fighting in Kandahar's Arghistan district. The same day, in neighboring Zabul Province, an Afghan police officer and four Taliban fighters were killed in a gun battle.
Afghanistan's Defense Ministry reported that in Helmand Province, a battle and air strikes in southern Afghanistan left some 30 suspected Taliban dead or wounded. General Mohammad Zahir Azimi said officials could not say how many of the 30 reported casualties were killed or how many wounded.
