The demonstrators were mostly mothers of people jailed for their activities during Tajikistan's 1992-97 civil war.

The demonstrators were calling for their children and other relatives to be freed, one day after President Emomali Rahmon signed an amnesty for some 400 prisoners held on charges also dating back to the civil war.

The amnesty came in the run-up to the tenth anniversary on June 27 of the accord that ended the war.
