Kyrgyz Supreme Court Reopens Probe Into Aksy Shootings

BISHKEK, June 28, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyzstan's Supreme Court has begun to review the investigation of the fatal shooting of six protesters in the southern Aksy district in March 2002, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reported.

During the hearing today, the the Prosecutor-General's Office asked the court to renew the investigation against former local officials.

The investigation that took place five years ago never identified who was responsible for the police crackdown that led to mass demonstrations across the country.
